“Mom? Is everything all right?”

Mom had a knack for calling at the wrong moment—when I was just about to walk out the door or step into the shower—but she never, ever, called me at work. I glanced over my shoulder at Risa talking to the caterer. Only two days before Mr. Liao’s show opening. I didn’t have time for personal calls.

“I’m sorry, sweetness, I know you’re busy. I just wanted to—”

“Look, can I call you back? I have the caterer here right now, and I need to check on when the courier is going to—”

“Mari.” Mom’s voice was suddenly sharp, tinged with anger. “Can’t you just let Risa take care of those little details? Isn’t that why you hired her? So she could take some of the admin stuff off your plate? You can trust her.”

I sighed. “I know that Mom, but there are some things Risa can’t handle and I—”

“Give her a chance, Mari! Shouldn’t you be spending your time doing photography yourself, instead of just selling other people’s work?”

I stood, stunned, mouth slightly open. Where had this tirade come from? Since when did Mom care about these things?

“I-I’m sorry, Mari. I’ll call you back later.” Mom’s voice was suddenly quiet, subdued. She hung up before I had a chance to respond.

I set my phone down on the table, took a deep breath, and went to apologize to the caterer for the interruption even as a dark sense of foreboding filled my body.

I could deny it no longer—something was wrong with Mom.
